Abstract:
We aim at a semi-empirical mass formula which has the properties
1) to be analytic, and simple to calculate,
2) to have its analytic structure being based on a theoretical
   microscopic understanding,
3) to be macroscopically self-consistent, that is, to be derived
   by a varational procedure, and
4) to reproduce the known experimentalmasses well, e.g. with a
small rms-deviation, without using too many parameters.
